John Missel 2 months agoOur second visit here, and it didn’t disappoint. The special appetizer of the day was this lovely baked potato smothered with bacon, crab, Parmesan cheese, and an old bay cream sauce. The blackened tuna was perfectly prepared medium rare (although our server was very happy to offer other temperatures if desired). It was topped with a red onion slaw and Gorgonzola. Delightful. The crab cakes were absolutely delicious - fresh, warm, flaky, perfect texture. Served with rice pilaf. Lastly, our server Justin and other staff were remarkably attentive despite the restaurant being busy! Highly recommend this restaurant!
Marci Fradkin 6 months agoReally yummy place very cozy in the winter. Really yummy. She crab soup with lots of crab and the flounder with shrimp and crab was yummy from the back. We didn’t have a cocktail, but the cocktails looked legit. You can only make reservation by calling and apparently in the summer, you need to call several days to a week in advance. They do own the two properties next-door that are open for brunch.
Sophanara Khoeun 3 months agoMy wife and I were visiting from out of state on a long-awaited trip to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and as oyster lovers, we happened to come across Tautog’s Restaurant by chance—and we’re so glad we did. It exceeded all of our expectations. From the moment we walked in, the experience was outstanding. The hostess greeted us warmly with a genuine smile and welcoming attitude, seating us right away with no wait. Our waiter, Rob, truly made the experience much more enjoyable. He was attentive, personable, and had a fantastic demeanor throughout the evening. Impressively, he seamlessly handled multiple roles, serving as our waiter, server, and bartender—all while maintaining top-notch service. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere made the entire dining experience even more enjoyable. If we could give more than five stars, we absolutely would. We will definitely be returning the next time we’re in town. Highly recommended!
Jason park 6 months agoWalked into Tautog’s without a reservation, expecting a wait. Instead, I was seated right away — a small victory. The place sits in what feels like an old beach house, creaky floors and all, just steps from the ocean. It’s got that lived-in charm that tells you it’s been serving locals long before TripAdvisor showed up.Service was sharp — friendly without being fake — and you can tell the kitchen’s actually cooking here, not reheating. They were out of raw oysters, which was a shame, but the steamed clams made up for it — briny, tender, simple perfection. The shrimp and grits came creamy and rich with a jammy sauce that didn’t hit my personal sweet spot (I’ve never been one for mixing dessert with dinner), but the flavors were still balanced and thoughtful. The scallops, though — those were the star: seared just right, buttery centers, the kind of dish that makes you stop talking mid-bite.If you go, try a glass of Virginia wine with whatever you order. It fits the place — unpretentious, coastal, and quietly confident. A proper meal by the sea.
Karen Daniel a month agoWe had a pretty bad experience and were disappointed. Appetizers took forever, 2 dozen oysters on the half shell took close to 45 minutes. The crab nachos had jalapeños in them which were not listed on the menu I (this was my meal). We were told over and over and over, “the oysters are coming out soon!” I finally told our server, you just told us that. This is when he revealed a 20-year veteran server took our oysters and gave them to his/her table. Butttt, the two dozen oysters came out separately and it took forever. We had sparse deliveries of food that was annoying and not that great. The nachos were an extreme disappointment with little to no crabmeat. Dessert was had and was free. Overall, a bad experience and subpar food. I won’t go back.
