Celebrated our anniversary with an amazing and memorable meal! The steak was great, but funnily enough the sides are what we still talk about!! The beets with goat cheese were next level; we have tried many times to recreate them at home. Eating at the bar next to the kitchen was really fun as you get to watch food drop into the wood fired oven.

This wasn’t on our list but I’m so glad we had a chance to eat here. We were greeted and made very comfortable and well taken care of, thanx to Kat. We tried the oysters, which were the best I’ve ever had, never had that preparation but pleasantly surprised. That’s how our dinner started and it only got better from there. If I had to do it again I would not change a thing. They didn’t disappoint and definitely will be returning. Thank you Kat for the guidance with the menu and the excellent wine pairing. Sorry for not adding pictures of the entrees, we had the roasted 1/2 chicken and the gnocchi, which we started devouring them before I thought to take a picture.

I would give death & taxes 6 stars if I could. Wood cooked steaks so flavorful and tender. Great wine selection. Exciting appetizers. The service was outstanding. The attention to detail and timing/sequencing of the food drop off was extremely impressive and genuinely left our group of 4 speechless. The bread pudding dessert was incredible. Fine dining at a reasonable price point in the heart of downtown Raleigh. They even kicked in a free champagne toast as we were celebrating our engagement, that was so generous and kind of them. Thank you so much

An absolutely wonderful experience for a relaxed weekday date night with my fiancé. Our server, Paige, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu options, attentive to preferences, and helpful with recommendations. We started with the roasted NC oysters, chili butter, preserved lemon gremolata; an unexpected hit for the both of us that we can't wait to go back and have again. For mains we chose NC fish, meyer lemon hollandaise, kosho, daikon - flounder was catch of the day and tagliatelle, crab, bottarga, smoked tomato, lemon breadcrumbs. The fish was a solid 4oz portion size and well grilled. The pasta was delightfully light and with the sauce did not overpower each bite, literally cleaned our plates. For dessert we almost selected 2, but Paige did share they are decent portions and we opted to split the sticky toffee pudding, embered vanilla ice cream, benne seed brittle. It was one of the best sticky coffee puddings I've had outside of when I've ordered in London. Everything was made fresh to order, it was a joy to be able to watch the prep from our table, and see the genuine teamwork of the front and back of house. The care in each dish was so evident and Paige helped make the night memorable for us as a long-distance couple just trying to enjoy an evening out together. We can't wait to go back again.

Death and Taxes is definitely an experience worth having. Walking in the door, the place has an unassuming feel to it. Simultaneously classy, but not over the top or stuck up. The food menu was small, but thoroughly curated. All of the food has an element of smoke, char, or fire to it. There are lots of vibrant flavor pairings and interesting takes on classic dishes. After trying 6 different menu items, I am comfortable saying you cannot choose a bad option. The wine selection was excellent, with a lot of unique small vinyard wines. Our server, Jess, was wonderful. She was very polite, had a strong knowledge of the menu, gave great recommendations, and was just attentive enough that we were never looking for her. If you are a foodie willing to shell out for a unique and delicious meal, definitely give this place a try.
